Artist - Brendan Hopper

Born in 1954 I did a Foundation in Art & Design in Liverpool, and an Honour's degree in Fine Art at Lanchester Polytechnic, Coventry, in the early seventies. I sort of rebelled against the prevailing "house style" of abstract painting that was in vogue at the college, not that I disliked it. The reason was that I was more interested in landscape painting, done in a contemporary style and showing mans interaction with the landscape.

I was one of only three students chosen to represent my college (so they didn't hold it against me then!) in The Stowells Trophy Exhibition at The Royal Academy. I was also the only artist to show three times at The Midland Under 25's Exhibition at Canon Hill Art Centre in Birmingham.

I exhibited at other galleries such as Coventry Municipal Gallery, The Belgrade Theatre in Coventry, The Acorn Gallery and also did some illustrations for magazines such as "Sussex Life". I then went into teaching and for the next 15 years or so taught Art and Design. As tiring as it was I still tried to paint and exhibited at Tullie House Gallery in Carlisle.

I left teaching in 1997 and apart from a brief return to it in 2003 I have been painting and exhibiting since then. I have sold work in galleries in The Lake District such as The Studio House Gallery Ambleside, The Lion House Gallery in Penrith and Slapestones in Grasmere. I have also sold work at Craft Fairs in the North East and have been represented at The Glass Gallery in Consett, The Lime Tree Gallery in Stanhope and had exhibitions at The Dales Centre in Stanhope and at Newcastle upon Tyne Library.
